A fair share of the enquiries that land in our inbox are not for one product. A trader in South America asks for galvanized coil, ppgi">PPGI coil for a roofing line, and square pipe for frames, all inside a single container. A contractor in East Africa orders corrugated sheets plus the angle iron to fix them down with. Buyers usually treat this as a simple shopping list: several items, one shipment, done. In practice, a mixed order is where most of the coordination work happens, and it is also where the difference between a smooth supplier and a frustrating one becomes obvious.
As soon as a combined PO arrives, we break it into its components and check each one against the workshop schedule. The reason is simple: every item runs on a different rhythm. A galvanized steel coil has to go through the galvanizing line after the substrate arrives. A PPGI order waits for its turn on the paint line, and the color code has to be mixed and confirmed first. Roofing sheets are slit from coil and then roll-formed to the profile the buyer chose. Square pipe runs on a separate mill altogether. None of these lines finish on the same day.
So we quote a shipping date per item, not one averaged date for the whole order. If the coil can be ready in twelve days and the square pipe will take twenty, the buyer hears that on day one, not on day eighteen when the first item is sitting in the warehouse. A container that waits at the port for its last missing item is a cost nobody wants to carry, and it is almost always caused by an over-optimistic single delivery promise made at the quotation stage.
Combined orders also multiply the number of small specification questions, because each product has its own set. For the coil items we need the coating class confirmed, Z80, Z120 or Z275, because it changes both price and lead time. For PPGI we ask for the RAL number rather than a color name, since names travel badly between languages. For roofing sheets it is the profile, the sheet thickness and the effective width. For pipe it is wall thickness and bundle weight, because buyers unloading by hand do not want a two-ton bundle.
We put these questions in one checklist and send it before production starts. It looks like extra paperwork on the first order, but it stops the mid-production change requests that delay everyone. Most of our regular buyers now answer the checklist in an hour, and the information gets printed and hung on the production sheet for each line.
Inside one container, different goods still get packed the way they would if they were shipped by themselves. Coils travel upright on steel cradles, wrapped in VCI paper against moisture, with edge protectors under the straps. PPGI color coated coil gets an extra soft wrap, because a scratched paint surface is the most common complaint we receive on painted material, and once the scratch is there, no paperwork fixes it. Corrugated sheets are stacked on pallets in bundles, with a layer of paper or foam between the bundles so the zinc surfaces do not rub against each other during weeks of ocean motion. Galvanized square pipe bundles get end caps over the cut edges, which are the first place coating damage shows.
There is one packing rule we insist on even when the buyer does not ask: heavy coils do not share a container with light roofing sheets unless the load plan is done properly. Coils are dense, roofing sheets are bulky, and a badly stowed mixed load shifts during transit. When the math does not work, we say so and suggest splitting the order, even if it means an extra container and a slightly higher freight cost per ton. An argument at the loading stage is cheaper than an insurance claim three weeks later.
On loading day each item is counted and photographed against the container number, and the tally is matched line by line to the packing list. We send the buyer photos and a short video of the load before the container is sealed. This sounds like a courtesy, but it serves a practical purpose: when the shipment arrives, the buyer's warehouse team can check the photos against what was unloaded and settle any dispute about shortages or damage in minutes instead of weeks. The paperwork follows the same logic. Packing list, commercial invoice, certificate of origin and the mill test certificates for each steel item are all keyed to the marks printed on the packages, so a customs broker can find a single bundle in a forty-foot container without unpacking everything.
We have run mixed orders like this for warehouse builders, roofing contractors, and distributors in roughly thirty export markets. The products change with the destination, but the routine does not: confirm the details, schedule each line honestly, pack for the sea, and document everything. That routine is why a buyer who starts with one mixed container usually comes back with a second, and a third, and eventually a regular shipping schedule.
If you are planning a combined order, send us the full item list together with the destination port. We will come back with a per-item delivery schedule, a loading plan, and an honest answer on which items fit in one container and which ones should not. The corrugated galvanized roofing sheet, the coil, and the pipe in between are all part of the same job, and we treat them that way.
