A buyer sends over a drawing with "2 mm galvanized sheet, 20 tons, CIF" written on it and waits for one number back. What usually comes back is a range. That range is not us hedging. Two suppliers can quote the same drawing at prices that differ by a hundred dollars a ton or more, and the gap almost never sits in the base metal. It sits in the dozen small decisions hiding behind the word "sheet".
Before we put a figure in an email, we walk through the list below. Here is what is on it, and why each line moves the number.
Q235B, S235JR, SS400, A36, ST37-2. In conversation they all get called "mild steel", and on a lot of drawings the note really does just say "mild steel". In practice they carry different carbon and manganese ranges, different yield guarantees and different mill routes. Q235B from a Chinese mill and A36 from an ASTM-certified mill are not interchangeable on paper, even when they behave almost the same way on a press brake.
So the first question is which standard governs. If the project is under a European spec, S235JR or S355JR usually fixes the price band before anything else does. On a US job, A36 or A572 pushes us toward plate mills that can supply the right paperwork. Tell us the standard and we can tell you whether we are quoting stock or a mill allocation.
For low carbon steel plate orders we also ask whether the material is going into structural work or into forming. Both grades will bend. They do not bend the same way, and if the part gets pressed into a shape with tight radii the difference shows up in your scrap rate rather than on our invoice.
Take galvanized steel coil. The phrase covers everything from a light Z100 spangle finish to a heavy Z275 coating on a full-hard substrate, and the zinc alone can be worth more than the steel underneath it. We ask three things: coating mass, surface finish, and whether the coil is skin-passed. A customer putting up a dry indoor partition can run Z120 and save real money. A customer building a livestock shed near the coast should not.
With PPGI color coated steel coil the questions multiply. What is the substrate, hot-dip galvanized or galvalume? What is the total dry film thickness, and is it a two-coat or a three-coat system? Which RAL shade, and does it need a top-brand paint or will a domestic system hold up? A 25-micron polyester system and a 5+20+5 PVDF system are both sold as "colour coated coil" and they are not the same product. Back-coat thickness matters too, and that is the line most buyers forget to put on the spec.
Thickness tolerance is the quiet one. Order 1.5 mm and the mill may ship 1.42 mm inside a standard tolerance band, which means you paid for less steel than you think you did. If your product is a formed panel where thickness drives stiffness, that is a real problem. If you are cutting blanks for a fence post, it is noise.
So we ask what happens after the coil lands. Slitting into narrow strip? Cut to length into flat sheets? Roll-forming into a roofing profile? Each answer changes what we specify at the mill: edge condition, camber limits, coil inner diameter, even whether the coil should be eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall for your uncoiler.
For 304 stainless steel plate the same logic applies with more zeros on the end. 2B, BA, No.4 brushed and 8K mirror all come off different lines, and ordering a mirror finish by accident is an expensive way to learn the difference. We also ask about the end use when the part will be welded, because 304L is usually the safer call there and it is better to know that before the plate is sheared than after.
Twenty tons is a very different order from two hundred. Small lots ride along in a consolidated container and the price reflects the space you occupy. Full container loads get quoted against mill schedules, and at that point the question becomes whether the mill can roll your width in one heat or needs two.
Destination decides packing. A container heading to a dry inland warehouse needs less protection than one sitting on a dock through a rainy season. For humid destinations we add VCI film, desiccant and edge protectors, and we wrap the coils so they survive being handled twice. That costs a little more per ton. It costs a lot less than a claim.
We also ask about the trade term early, because FOB, CIF and DDP change who owns the risk at each step, and the documents follow from there. That said, if you need a mill test certificate in a particular format, say so now. Chasing a certificate after the vessel sails is nobody's idea of a good week.
Once those answers are in, the quote stops being a range. We come back with a grade and standard, a coating spec, tolerances, packing detail, the trade term, a loading port and a delivery window. If something in your spec is going to cost you money without buying you anything, we will say so. Actually, a customer who over-specifies on the first order almost always corrects it on the second, and we would rather skip that step.
That is the whole point of the questions. A quote built on four lines of text is a guess. A quote built on a filled-in spec sheet is something we can still stand behind eighteen months later, when the container is on the water and someone in your office asks why the coil weighs what it weighs.
