1. General austenitic stainless steel

304 Series

ASTM 304 (S30400)/JIS SUS304

Composition: Cr 18-20%, Ni 8-10.5%, C≤0.08%

Features: Resistant to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, suitable for food-grade applications (such as kitchenware and tableware)

Mechanical properties: Tensile strength ≥515 MPa, yield strength ≥205 MPa, elongation ≥40%

304L (Low-carbon Version)

Composition: C≤0.03%, others are similar to 304

Advantages: Stronger resistance to intergranular corrosion, suitable for scenarios where no heat treatment is required after welding (such as chemical equipment)

2. 316 Series

ASTM 316 (S31600)/JIS SUS316

Composition: Cr 16-18%, Ni 10-14%, Mo 2-3%, C≤0.08%

Characteristics: Resistant to chloride corrosion (such as seawater and chemical media), and has excellent high-temperature strength

Application: Marine engineering, medical equipment, pipelines in acidic environments

316L (Low-carbon Version)

Ingredients: C≤0.03%, Mo content is slightly higher

Advantages: It has better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and no annealing is required after welding

Ii. Nickel-saving Stainless Steel (Low Cost)

1.201 Series.

ASTM 201 / JIS SUS201 (1Cr17Mn6Ni5N)

Composition: Cr 16-18%, Mn 5.5-7.5%, Ni 3.5-5.5%, C≤0.15%

Characteristics: After processing, it has weak magnetism, poor corrosion resistance, and a low price

Application: Decorative materials, furniture, low-end tableware

2. 202 Series

ASTM 202 / JIS SUS202 (1Cr18Mn8Ni5N)

Components: Mn 7.5-10%, Ni 4-6%, Cr 17-19%

Features: Its corrosion resistance is slightly better than that of 201 but lower than that of 304, making it suitable for interior decoration

1.301 Series

ASTM 301 / JIS SUS301

Composition: Cr 16-18%, Ni 6-8%, C≤0.15%

Characteristics: The strength is significantly enhanced after cold working, making it suitable for springs and railway vehicle components

Mechanical properties: Tensile strength ≥520 MPa, elongation ≥40%

Component differences

ASTM: Allows a slightly wider range of components (such as Ni 8-11%)

JIS: Stricter control over impurities (such as P≤0.045%)

Priority of corrosion resistance:

General environment: 304/304L

Chlorine-containing environment: 316/316L

Low-cost demand: 201/202

Processing and Welding

When welding, low-carbon models (such as 304L and 316L) are preferred to avoid intergranular corrosion

Cold working hardening requirements: Select 301 or cold-rolled hard sheet
