Two coils arrive at the same yard on the same week. Both are DX51D, both are marked Z275, and the price per ton is within a few dollars. When the wrap comes off, one is covered in large, star-shaped zinc crystals that catch the light, and the other looks almost flat and uniform, closer to matte grey than to silver. A buyer who has not run into this before will usually assume something went wrong with one of the coils. Nothing did. The two coils were simply finished differently, and the finish was chosen on purpose.

Here is what separates them.

Where spangle comes from

Spangle is the visible pattern of zinc grains on a hot-dip galvanized surface. When the strip comes out of the zinc bath, the molten coating freezes on the steel, and as it solidifies the zinc grows into crystals. Those crystals grow outwards from starting points across the strip, and because the grains reflect light at different angles, you see the familiar snowflake pattern. How large the grains get depends mostly on what is dissolved in the bath: small amounts of lead or antimony encourage big, showy grains, while a cleaner bath produces finer ones. Cooling speed matters as well, which is why the same chemistry can look different between two lines.

Regular spangle, the big crystal kind, is what most people picture when they think of galvanized sheet. Minimized or zero spangle is produced by keeping those alloying elements out and sometimes by blowing fine zinc dust or steam across the surface as it solidifies, so the grains never get the chance to grow large. The result is a much more even finish, and it is what most appliance and paint-line buyers ask for.

Worth knowing: spangle is a visual property. A regular spangle coil and a zero spangle coil at the same coating weight will pass the same salt spray requirements from the mill. The pattern itself does not tell you how much zinc is on the strip, which is why buying on appearance alone is a trap.

Skin-passing, and why some coils look almost dull

After galvanizing, some material goes through a light rolling pass, usually with a 0.5 to 1.5 percent reduction. This is skin-passing. It does three jobs at once. It flattens the spangle so the surface looks finer and more uniform, it removes the yield point in the steel so the sheet does not show stretcher strains when it is pressed or roll-formed later, and it gives the surface a controlled roughness that paint and adhesive can grip.

The trade-off is the look. A skin-passed coil will never have that bright crystal sparkle, and customers ordering roofing sheet for the first time sometimes ring us to ask whether the material is second grade because it is not shiny. It is not. If anything, the skin-passed coil is usually the more expensive one to make, because there is an extra step and the surface demands are tighter.

For PPGI color coated coil the base strip is nearly always skin-passed and spangle-minimized. Paint is honest: it shows every large crystal edge underneath as a visible ripple once the coil is painted and formed. That is the main reason paint lines prefer a flat, even substrate, and it is also why a color coated panel and a bare galvanized panel from the same order book can come from coils that look nothing alike before painting.

Passivation and oiling: the part you cannot see

Fresh out of the bath, a galvanized surface is chemically active and will react with air and moisture during storage. To slow that down, the strip passes through a post-treatment. Chromate passivation has been the standard for decades and gives the surface a faint yellow or blue tint; the chrome-free alternatives, usually based on titanium or silicate chemistry, are now common in markets where hexavalent chrome is restricted. Either way, the film is microscopic. You cannot judge by eye whether a coil was passivated, which is exactly why it needs to be written into the order rather than assumed.

Oiling is the second layer of protection. A thin oil film helps coils survive humid sea voyages, especially the long ones, but it has to be removed before painting, and some buyers would rather have no oil and control storage themselves. There is also anti-fingerprint treatment, an organic film over the passivation layer, common on thin galvanized used in appliances and electronics enclosures, where a visible fingerprint that etches into the surface is a genuine quality claim.

What to put on the order

None of this needs to be complicated, but it does need to be written down. On a galvanized steel coil order, the useful surface line reads something like: spangle regular or minimized, skin-passed or not, passivation type, oiled or unoiled. For galvanized steel plate destined for visible architectural work, add a note about which face matters, because mills will focus their surface controls on the top side unless told otherwise.

And when the material is going straight into a painted product, it is worth saying so before the base coil is chosen. We have seen orders where a regular spangle base was used under a light grey paint, and the spangle telegraphed through as visible texture that the end customer read as a defect. Same grade, same zinc weight, technically compliant, and still rejected at the loading dock.

The short version: the grade and the coating weight tell you how the coil will perform. Spangle, skin-pass and passivation tell you what it will look like and how it will behave downstream. Both sets of words belong on the enquiry, and if you are not sure which finish suits your process, that is a five-minute question for whoever is quoting you, and much cheaper to ask before production than after.
