Walk past a prefab site office in Southeast Asia and the wall panels are probably not brick, not timber and not tile. They are steel, printed with a pattern that reads as brick from three metres away. The same trick shows up on roller shutters in Europe, on refrigerator doors, on supermarket shelving and on the inside of lift cars.
Printed color coated coil, sometimes sold as pattern coil or wood grain coil, sits in a small corner of the coated steel world. Buyers who already understand ordinary colour coating often get lost here, because the rules are similar but the failure modes are not.
Start with a normal coated substrate. Usually that is a hot-dip galvanized coil, sometimes galvalume, occasionally cold rolled or stainless. The substrate takes a primer, and then instead of a single flat colour coat, a pattern is transferred onto the wet paint film by a printing roller. The pattern is finished with a clear topcoat.
So a printed pattern galvanized steel coil is not a different family of steel. It is one extra step laid on top of the coating line. That matters for pricing and for how you write a purchase spec, because everything you would normally specify about the substrate still applies underneath: coating mass, thickness, spangle, skin-pass.
The printing station is a roller train. A gravure or flexo roller carries the pattern etched into its surface, picks up ink from a pan and presses it against the moving strip. Every colour in the design needs its own station, so a brick pattern with three tones runs through three print rollers in sequence, each one registered to the last.
Registration is the hard part. If a roller drifts a fraction of a millimetre, the mortar lines stop lining up and the coil reads as smudged from a distance. Line speed is kept lower than on a plain colour coating line for exactly this reason, and the ovens have to dry each ink layer without blistering the one underneath it.
After the ink comes the topcoat, usually a clear polyester, sometimes with a matte additive if the customer wants the pattern to look less glossy. A matt topcoat also hides registration error better, which is part of why so much wood grain product ships matt rather than gloss.
Printed coil lives or dies on abrasion resistance. Plain colour coil gets scratched and you see a scratch. Patterned coil gets scratched and you see a white line across a wood grain, which gives the game away instantly.
Two things help. First, film build: the topcoat needs enough dry film thickness to take handling and roll-forming without cutting through to the ink below. Second, the ink system itself. Standard polyester inks are fine for interior panels and light forming. For exterior cladding that will be roll-formed into profile and then walked on by installers, you want a harder system and a thicker clear coat.
Anything bent tightly is a risk. A brick grain PPGI wrapped around a sharp radius will crack at the bend unless the coating was formulated for it, and that crack opens a path for moisture straight down to the zinc layer.
The obvious use is a building envelope where the client wants a look they cannot afford in the real material. Prefab housing, site offices, container conversions, garden rooms, cold storage units and shopfront fascia all run on printed coil. A flower pattern PPGI coil does the same job in markets where decorative ceilings and interior partitions are the norm.
There is a second, less obvious market in appliances and furniture. Refrigerator doors, washing machine tops, shelving uprights, filing cabinets and lift interiors use printed steel because it survives handling better than a laminated film and does not delaminate along the edges. Audio equipment and printer housings use it for the same reason.
And a third in transport. Bus interior panels, truck body linings and cargo container linings get patterned steel partly for looks and partly because a pattern hides the dents and scuffs that a flat gloss panel would advertise to everyone who walks past it.
Ask for the substrate spec separately from the print spec. A supplier who only quotes "printed coil, 0.4 mm" has not told you anything you can build on.
Then pin down the pattern itself: reference number or artwork file, number of colours, and whether the sample you approved came off the same line that will run your order. Registration and colour drift between lines is real, and a signed-off sample is the only defence you have.
Ask for topcoat thickness in microns rather than "with clear coat". Ask what the coating system is rated for, interior only or exterior exposure. And ask for a bend test on the actual pattern, because a flat panel test tells you nothing about what happens when the strip goes through a roll former.
Finally, think about direction. Patterns have a grain and coil has a rolling direction. If your panels will be installed vertically, say so, because a brick pattern printed across the coil will run sideways on a vertical panel unless the print is oriented for it. This is the single most common complaint in the printed color coated coil business, and it gets decided at the order stage, not on site.
