Steel structures are engineering systems composed of steel as the main load-bearing components, connected by welding, bolts or rivets. As an important structural form in modern architecture, steel structures are widely used in high-rise buildings, large-span venues, industrial plants, bridge projects and other fields due to their advantages of high strength, light weight and fast construction speed.

Material Properties: Steel features high strength and light weight. The ratio of its density to yield strength is relatively low. Under the same force conditions, the cross-section of components is small and the self-weight is light, which is convenient for transportation and installation. Steel also has excellent plasticity and toughness, capable of withstanding large deformations and having good seismic performance. 

Structural advantages: The manufacturing and installation of steel structures have a high degree of mechanization. Components can be prefabricated in factories and assembled on-site, shortening the construction period by approximately 30% to 50% compared to traditional structures. Steel structures have excellent sealing performance and can be made into high-pressure containers with excellent air-tightness and water-tightness. Additionally, steel can be 100% recycled, which aligns with the concept of green buildings.

Advantages and Disadvantages Analysis

Advantages: High strength, light weight, excellent seismic performance, fast construction speed, high space utilization rate, and environmentally friendly and recyclable. The demolition of steel structure buildings generates almost no construction waste, and the steel recycling rate can reach over 90%. 

Disadvantages: Poor fire resistance (strength tends to zero at 600℃), poor corrosion resistance (regular anti-corrosion maintenance is required), relatively poor sound insulation effect, and relatively high initial cost. Fireproofing, anti-corrosion and other protective measures need to be taken in special environments.
