Ask anyone in this trade where steel gets damaged and most people will point at the mill, or the sea voyage, or the container. After years of running claims back to their source, our honest answer is less dramatic: the yard. A coil can come through hot rolling, pickling, galvanizing and a coating line without a mark, then pick up a dented eye or a bruised edge in the last two hundred metres before it ships. And when that happens, it's the customer who ends up explaining a telescoped coil to his end user. So we treat yard handling as part of the product, not as a warehouse chore. The way we see it, careful handling is cheaper than any claim we could settle.
For coils standing with a vertical eye, our first choice is a C-hook on the overhead crane. The hook slides into the eye, the crane takes the load, and the coil travels the way it was designed to travel: hanging, not dragged. The rules around it are boring but they work. The hook has to be seated square in the eye. The load has to hang plumb. Nobody walks a coil over another coil, and nobody stands under a moving one. Swing is the real enemy - an operator who tries to save a minute by swinging a coil across the bay is the same operator who later finds the inner wraps have shifted and telescoped out of the pack. There is no cheap fix for a badly telescoped coil; you slit off the damaged wraps and lose the weight, or you scrap it. Ninety seconds of patience beats either outcome, every single time.
Not every move goes by crane, of course. Smaller coils travel by forklift, but with a boom attachment rather than bare forks, because fork tips inside a coil eye are how you get a crescent-shaped gouge punched through the wraps. That is a particularly nasty defect to find late - it often only shows up after the customer has run the material through a slitter, which is the worst possible moment to discover it. On galvanized steel coil orders we are stricter again. A gouge that breaks through the zinc layer will show white rust before the material even clears the port, and no paint touch-up in the world puts the coating back. Coils with a horizontal eye go onto a coil car or a ram instead, which supports the wraps over a wide surface instead of pinching them at two points.
Storage gets less attention than lifting, but it causes just as much grief. A coil left sitting flat on bare concrete will take a set over time - the bottom wraps flatten, and the coil never unwinds truly flat again. So everything sits on timber dunnage or steel cradles, spaced to keep the coil round, with the heavier coils on the bottom row and nothing stacked so high that the bottom pack carries more than it should. The floor is marked into bays so the crane knows where it can land a load without clipping something else, and stock rotates: older coils ship first, because a coil that sits for a season is a coil collecting questions. Humid-season rules tighten up - no coils parked under a roof leak, no packing left open overnight. For hot rolled carbon steel coil the surface is forgiving by comparison, but plate is its own discipline: hot rolled steel plate goes onto edge on timber strips so slings and clamps can get underneath without dragging a corner across the face of the sheet below.
Handling does not end until the coil is in the truck or the container, and the last stretch is where packaging choices earn their keep. Banding, VCI paper, edge protectors, coil-eye caps - all of it gets applied at the staging area, while the coil is still sitting calm and accessible, not half-way into a container where nobody can reach the far eye. Orders for PPGI color coated coil always leave with protective interleaving in place, because a painted surface shows a handling scratch forever, and repainting a coil is not a thing anyone does. If a customer has a preference for how coils are lifted at his own warehouse - slings through the eye, no clamps on the wraps, whatever it is - we would much rather hear it before banding than after. It costs nothing to band it your way. It costs a conversation to un-band it.
None of this is clever. There is no technology story here, just cranes used the way the manual says and timber placed where it belongs. But when a vessel of ours discharges clean, square, banded coils on the other side of the world, it is usually because somebody in the yard refused to hurry. That refusal, multiplied across thousands of coils a year, is the cheapest quality programme we run.
