A buyer from Poland once told us we were the first supplier who had tried to talk him out of an order. He had asked for 0.12 mm full-hard cold rolled coil to make roofing sheets, and we spent twenty minutes explaining why that material would fight him at every step. He bought from someone else, then came back eight weeks later with a container of buckled sheets. We do not enjoy that kind of confirmation.
Saying no is part of this job. Four situations come up often enough that they are worth writing down.
This is the most common one, and it usually starts with a price copy. A buyer sees a good number on a thin-gauge coil and wants it for an outdoor application that needs a heavier coating. A Z100 galvanized steel coil is a perfectly good product. Put it on a coastal roof and the coating will be gone long before the structure is. We would rather sell the Z275 or the AZ150 at a higher price than watch the material fail in year four, because that conversation always ends with our name in it.
Same pattern with forming. Full-hard temper is cheap and strong, and it cracks when somebody tries a tight bend radius on a simple press. Soft temper costs a little more and bends without drama.
Coating weight is not the only mismatch we run into. A buyer orders pre-painted coil in a bright shade for panels that will be folded and profiled hard, and the paint opens along the fold because the film was chosen for flat work. It is the same product family, just the wrong film for the job. A few questions about how the sheet will be formed settles it before the paint is ordered, which is far cheaper than settling it afterwards.
Every few weeks an enquiry arrives asking for 1.0 mm hot-rolled sheet held to plus or minus 0.02 mm across a whole container. The applicable standard allows a wider band than that on hot-rolled material, and we are not going to sign a document claiming otherwise. The honest answer comes in two versions: buy cold-rolled or skin-passed material, which will hold a tighter gauge and costs more, or accept the standard tolerance and design the part around it.
There is a second version of this question that catches people out. Somebody asks for positive-only tolerance on thickness, meaning every sheet has to be at or above nominal. That is achievable, and it means the coil is effectively one gauge heavier than quoted, so the tonnage on the invoice goes up even though the piece count stays the same. Better to hear it before the order than to find it in the final invoice.
Nine days for a mill run in a custom RAL shade, in the middle of a busy quarter. It is not happening, and pretending otherwise just moves the disappointment to a later date. Colour on a PPGI colour coated coil means a coating line run, matched paint, sometimes a sample panel for approval, and then a slot on a line that other people are also queuing for.
So we offer the choice instead. Take a stock colour and load next week, or take the exact shade and plan for a longer window. Both are fine answers. “Yes, no problem” followed by silence is not.
Four hundred kilos of a specific grade, cut to a size nobody stocks. We will not refuse to quote it, but we will tell the customer what the number looks like and why: small heat, small volume, extra handling, and a mill that is not interested in the schedule. Very often the better route is to take a stock size and have it cut locally, or to wait until a larger order in the same grade is being placed and ride along with it. That saves more money than any negotiation on unit price.
Occasionally a buyer asks us to adjust a mill test certificate. Change a yield value, drop a heat number, issue a certificate for material from a different mill. We decline, and the conversation ends there. A certificate that does not describe the steel in the container is worse than no certificate, because it puts the risk on the person accepting the delivery. If a customer needs a specific property, the way to get it is to order material that has it, and we will help with that.
Usually we send an alternative. A different hot rolled carbon steel coil with the coating weight the application actually needs. A gauge that can be held at the price the project can carry. A corrugated roofing sheet in a stock colour instead of a special one, delivered on the date the site can work with.
Some of those suggestions lose us the order that week. A fair number of them come back a year or two later as a regular account, which is the only marketing we have ever been good at. Steel trading runs on repeat business, and repeat business runs on the customer not being surprised after the container is unloaded.
If you are weighing two options and the cheaper one looks slightly wrong on paper, ask us directly. We will tell you which way we would go, even when the answer costs us tonnage.
