A master coil leaves the mill at whatever width the mill chose to roll, and that is usually 1000mm, 1219mm or 1250mm. It is almost never the width your machine wants. If you run a roll former, a tube mill, a purlin line or a press, you are probably feeding something between 50mm and 900mm, and nobody enjoys paying for strip that ends up as scrap on the floor.

That gap is the reason slitting and cut-to-length exist. It is also one of the few places where a service centre can save a customer real money, but only when both sides agree on a few details before the knives go in. Here is what we go through when someone asks us to turn a master coil into something they can actually run.

What the slitting line is doing to your coil

A slitter is not a complicated machine. An uncoiler pays the master coil out, a set of circular knives on two arbors shears the strip into parallel strips, and a recoiler winds each strip back onto its own mandrel. Between those three stations sit a pile of small decisions: knife clearance, arbor spacing, strip tension, and how hard the recoiler pulls.

Knife clearance is the one that shows up on your finished part. Set it too wide and the strip tears instead of shearing, which leaves a rough edge and a fine burr along the full length. Set it too tight and the knives wear quickly and you get a rolled-over edge instead. For a 1.0mm galvanized steel coil we normally start around 6% to 8% of thickness, and slightly tighter on harder material. That is a starting point, not something we never move. The right number depends on tensile strength and on how the customer intends to use the edge.

Then there is mill edge against slit edge. Mill edge keeps the original rolled edge from the steelworks. Slit edge is sheared, so it holds width more consistently and looks cleaner, but it burrs more easily and on coated material it leaves a bare cut face that will rust first if the strip sits out in the weather. If the material goes straight into a paint line or a roll former, slit edge is fine. If the edge stays visible in the finished product, say so early, because we can deburr it or adjust the way we run it.

Cut-to-length is a different job from slitting

Not everyone wants a coil back. Plenty of buyers want flat sheets at a fixed length, and that runs on different equipment: the strip is uncoiled, pushed through a leveller to take out the coil set, then sheared to length and stacked. The two things that decide whether the stack is usable are length tolerance and flatness.

Length tolerance is written as a plus-or-minus figure, and it gets tighter as the sheet gets shorter. Squareness matters just as much — a sheet that is the right length but out of square will fight you in a press brake. Flatness is the item people notice last and complain about first, because it only becomes obvious once the parts are stacked and the stack has a wave running through it.

We apply the same discipline whatever the substrate, since the tooling changes but the questions do not. A 304 stainless steel coil wants different knife clearance and different tension from a carbon steel coil, and coated products bring their own problem, which is that every cut edge is a place where the coating stops.

Four things we need before quoting

The finished width or sheet length, with the tolerance you can actually live with rather than the tolerance you would like in a perfect world. The tonnage, because a single slit coil of two tonnes behaves differently on a recoiler than a run of twenty. The substrate, so we know whether we are handling a PPGI color coated coil that needs careful handling to avoid coating damage, or a plain cold rolled coil where the only real worry is surface scratching. And the edge condition: mill edge, slit edge, or deburred.

One more item is worth raising early. Slitting turns one master coil into several narrow coils, and the weights add up to roughly what you started with, minus trim. So if your order is 3 tonnes and the master coil is 8 tonnes, you either take the whole coil or we find somebody to share the balance with. Being flexible on balance weight is often the difference between a workable price and an awkward one.

Packing slit coils so they arrive round

Narrow slit coils are more fragile in transit than a full-width master coil. They crush more easily, they telescope more easily, and they lose shape fast if the lifting gear grabs them on the wrong axis. Ours go onto wooden pallets, strapped in at least three places, wrapped against moisture, with the eye direction marked clearly on the outside. A coil lifted the wrong way may never come back to round.

Cut sheets have the opposite packaging problem, because the stack itself is what gets damaged. Banded too tightly at the corners, sheets get bent corners. Banded too loosely, the stack shifts inside the container. Corner protectors and strapping in the right places solve it, and although that work is unglamorous, it decides whether your material arrives usable.

If you are not sure whether your part should start life as a slit coil or a cut sheet, send the drawing and tell us how the material feeds into your line. Most of the time the answer is obvious once we see that, and settling it before the coil is cut is always cheaper than settling it afterwards.
